A man has been arrested after allegedly throwing roof tiles during a lengthy police standoff believed to be sparked by a domestic violence incident.

Police, together with Dog Operations attended a unit complex in Gilberton to investigate a domestic incident about 8.30pm on Saturday.

Police located the suspect, a 42-year-old Gilberton man, in the unit and attempted to engage with him before he climbed onto a balcony and then scaled adjoining units onto the roof of the complex.

The man refused to come down and threw tiles from the roof.

Negotiators, STAR and PolAir attended the scene and the MFS were also called in to assist.

After extensive negotiations to safely resolve the incident the man surrendered to police at 2.30am on Sunday morning and was brought to safety with the aid of the MFS rescue ladder.

The man was arrested for assault, breaching an intervention order and possession of a controlled drug.

The investigation is continuing, and further charges may be laid.

The man has not applied for bail at this time.

Deputy Premier Susan Close said the incident “sounds absolutely terrifying”.

“I understand the police were very responsive to what had been raised with them as an emergency situation,” Dr Close said.

“The woman in this circumstance is now seeking to live elsewhere and we’ve made sure that the Housing Minister’s office is well aware of that and as we head into the new week they will be looking into the circumstances.”

The incident occurred just streets away from where Dr Michael Yung, 61, was stabbed in an alleged attack inside his $2m James St, Gilberton home in December.

The father-of-two, 61, succumbed to catastrophic injuries.

It is understood the eminent intensive-care pediatrician, who was also a senior WCH consultant, suffered traumatic head injuries, including bleeding on the brain, as well as chest and bowel wounds.
