A former police officer who indecent assaulted two people, including a fellow officer, while stationed in a rural town has been jailed.
Martin Duku, 23, of Pooraka was found guilty at trial of three counts of indecent assault and not guilty of a fourth.
On Thursday, Magistrate John Wells sentenced Duku to 13 months behind bars for the offending.
During sentencing submissions Duku’s counsel Kathryn Waite argued her client should be allowed to serve his sentence in the community.
She said Duku’s time in jail would be particularly difficult because he would need to be kept in protective custody.
However, Mr Wells found the offending was too serious to suspend or allow him to serve the sentence on home detention.
Martin Duku, 32, from Pooraka was found guilty following a trial before a magistrate of three counts of indecent assault towards two female victims.
He was a serving police officer at the time of the assaults and was based out of Port Augusta. He has since been fired.
In May, one of Duku’s victims, who remains a police officer laid bare the suffering she has experienced in the aftermath of the attack.
“You’ve made my life a living hell because of what you did to me, it will never be the same because of you sexually assaulting me,” she told Magistrate John Wells.
“Sadly I will carry this with me for the rest of my life.
“This should never have happened, I should never have had to be here, but most of all a serving police officer should never have sexually assaulted me.”
