The Advertiser Adelaide update: Royal Park shooting, Mount Barker stabbing (7NEWS)

An elderly man and a woman have died following a tragic crash in the Riverland.

Just after 1pm, police and emergency crews were called to the Sturt Hwy, between Range Rd and Vasey Rd, at Waikerie, after a Holden station wagon and a Nissan sedan crashed.

The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan, a 75-year-old man from the Riverland and the driver and sole occupant of the Holden, a 78-year-old woman from Waterloo Corner, both died at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by Major Crash who attended the scene.

The Sturt Hwy was closed for several hours between Hardy Rd and Old Blanchetown Rd, with heave vehicles diverted at Maggea Rd and Hunter Rd at Paisley.

Motorists were warned to expect delays and were asked to avoid the area if possible.

The highway has since reopened to all traffic.

Their deaths are the eighth and ninth lives lost on our roads this year as compared to one for this time last year.

It comes a day after a man died in a single vehicle crash on the Eyre Peninsula.
