The Sturt Highway is closed after a serious crash involving an 89-year-old man.

An 89-year-old man has been taken to hospital following a serious crash in the Riverland on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Cobdogla on the Sturt Hwy just after 12.10pm following reports a Mitsubishi Pajero and a Morris Minor had crashed at the intersection of Drogemuller Rd.

It is understood that a person was thrown from a vehicle after the T-bone crash.

The 49-year-old male driver of the Pajero, from McCracken, was taken to Berri Hospital as a precaution.

His 45-year-old male and 14-year-old female passengers were not injured.

The 89-year-old driver of the Minor, from Berri, received serious, but not-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Berri Hospital before being flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the elderly man is undergoing treatment for injuries on his arms and legs.

The Sturt Hwy is currently closed with diversions in place and is only expected to reopen after 4pm.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
