South Australia is preparing for a hot start to the week with some areas expected to record over 40 degrees on Monday.

Adelaide is expected to hit a high of 38 degrees in Monday ahead of a cool change on Tuesday – though the Bureau of Meteorology warns some northern suburbs could top 40C.

Senior metrologist Simon Timcke said there will be “pretty hot conditions across most of the state”.

“(Monday) we’ll see an even hotter day especially in the north east,” he said.

Mr Timcke said there is a slight chance Adelaide could reach 40 degrees on Monday, but it would most likely be in the afternoon.

“The change will gradually move across the north on Wednesday bringing cooler conditions,” he said.

Mr Timcke said there will be an elevated fire danger on Tuesday with extreme fire danger warnings issues for the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, the mid north, the Riverland and Murraylands.

The temperature will significantly drop by Tuesday with a high of 27 degrees, followed by a high of 25 degrees on Wednesday.

The weather will pick up again on Thursday with a top of 29 degrees expected in Adelaide, followed by 31 degrees on Friday, 33 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday.

The Riverland will see some of the hotter weather with Renmark expected to record 41 degrees on Monday and 40 degrees on Tuesday, before dropping to 28C on Wednesday

Port Augusta will also see backing temperatures with an expected top of 42 degrees on Monday, 38C on Tuesday, and a pleasant 27C on Wednesday.

Coober Pedy is also expected to reach 41C on Monday with Tuesday expected to reach a scorching 42 degrees before dipping to 34C on Wednesday.

Twins Reuben and Maisy Hamilton, 6, and Felix Hamilton, 4, who live at Port Willunga, said their favourite way to cool down on hot days is to go to the beach and then play in their blow up pools in the backyard.

“We put pools up and just play in there,” they said. “We put the sprinkler under the trampoline.”

“We love the hot weather … we like it because we can go down to the beach.”
