Top doctor Michael Yung’s home was chosen at random for home invasion by a couple looking for items to steal, SA Police and prosecutors will allege.

The Advertiser understands prosecutors will make no allegation that Kerem Aydin and Jacinta Davila had any prior connection to, interaction with or knowledge of Dr Yung prior to his alleged murder.

The Advertiser also understands Major Crime detectives are continuing their investigations into the couple’s private lives and past histories following their court appearance on Wednesday.

Mr Aydin and Ms Davila, who have an eight-month-old child together, have yet to plead to counts of murder and aggravated serious criminal trespass in a place of residence.

The shocking incident, involving a renowned, life-saving doctor, has baffled the South Australian public and prompted intense speculation on social media.

In court documents, however, police allege the couple’s motive was to enter Dr Yung’s home as trespassers.

The documents allege they had “the intention of” stealing “property of the value of more than $30,000”, and “used or threatened to use an offensive weapon” at the time.

Additionally, prosecutors have told the court that the ladder allegedly used by the couple to enter Dr Yung’s home was already in place, and neither brought nor positioned by them.

They allegedly gained access to Dr Yung’s home through an upstairs window, leaving behind a head torch from which their DNA was later recovered, before heading downstairs.

There, it is alleged, they encountered Dr Yung and, after a scream and a loud noise was heard, he was found with critical head and spinal injuries.

It is further alleged Mr Aydin and Ms Davila were arrested after they shoplifted medical supplies from Chemist Warehouse and Drake’s Foodland at Torrensville to treat wounds he sustained in the incident.

Under SA law, police and prosecutors do not have to prove a motive in order to pursue murder charges against alleged offenders.

They must prove, beyond reasonable doubt, either that the offender did a deliberate act that caused the victim’s death while intending to kill or intending to cause serious harm.

Alternatively they must prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that the offender did a deliberate act with reckless indifference to the threat it posed to human life, and by that act caused the victim’s death.

Ms Davila will seek release on home detention bail next week, while Mr Aydin has been remanded in custody until March.
