The driver allegedly responsible for killing Charlie Stevens – the son of the Police Commissioner – has learned the full extent of the charges he faces.

Charlie Stevens’ siblings leave court

The older siblings of Charlie Stevens have attended court – accompanied by SA Police – as the charges against his alleged killer driver have been finalised by prosecutors.

Sophie Tregloan and Josh Stevens – daughter and son of Police Commissioner Grant Stevens – sat quietly in the Adelaide Magistrates Court gallery on Tuesday as Dhirren Singh Randhawa stood in the dock.

Supported by three police officers, they listened as Director of Public Prosecutions Martin Hinton KC confirmed the charges of causing Charlie’s death by dangerous driving would be pursued.

However, the court also heard negotiations with defence counsel “had begun”.

Following the crash, on Beach Rd, Goolwa, last year, Mr Randhawa, 18, of Encounter Bay, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He was further charged with the lesser, alternative offence of aggravated driving without due care, leaving the scene of a crash after causing death and failing to truly answer questions.

Previously, the court heard there were conflicting witness accounts of the incident and imposed bans on him contacting all but one of those people.

Final determination of his charges was to have occurred in March but was postponed pending reports from a pathologist and from experts reconstructing the crash.

On Tuesday, Mr Hinton confirmed all four charges against Mr Randhawa, as originally alleged following his arrest, would proceed.

Jane Abby KC, for Mr Randhawa, asked the court formally record the fact that negotiations between the parties had begun.

Magistrate John Wells remanded Mr Randhawa to answer the charges in June.
