Charlie Stevens’ alleged killer driver case faces delays as expert reconstruction of crash incomplete

The Charlie Stevens’ alleged killer driver case resumed on Tuesday only to hit a stumbling block.

Dhirren Singh Randhawa leaves court in Adelaide

Two expert reports that are central to the case against Charlie Stevens’ alleged killer driver – including the reconstruction of the fatal car crash – remain outstanding, a court has heard.

On Tuesday, prosecutors were scheduled to tell the Adelaide Magistrates Court whether or not they would continue to pursue allegations Dhirren Singh Randhawa caused Mr Stevens’ death by dangerous driving.

However, Director of Public Prosecutions Martin Hinton KC instead asked the court to postpone that hearing until next month.

“Today was the date for charge determination, but I am seeking an adjournment of five weeks of that date,” he said.

“The reason being I do not have the pathology report or the expert reconstruction report yet.

“Im assured both will be provided to me within three-to-four weeks.”

Mr Randhawa, 18, of Encounter Bay, has yet to plead to causing death by dangerous driving and the lesser, alternative charge of aggravated driving without due care.

He is further charged with leaving the scene of a crash after causing death and failing to truly answer questions.

Prosecutors allege he was the driver of the car that struck and killed Charlie, son of SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens, on Beach Rd, Goolwa, during Schoolies in 2023.

Previously, the court heard there were conflicting witness accounts of the incident and imposed bans on him contacting all but one of those people.

On Tuesday, counsel for Mr Radhawa said they did not oppose a short delay in the case.

Magistrate John Wells remanded Mr Randhawa on continuing bail to face court again next month.
