Danielle Lewis reads emotional apology to Rena Yaeger and Jack Pearce, the victims of her high-speed crash

A young mum who T-boned another car while high on meth and disqualified from driving fled the scene, returned, and fled again in a stolen car – while two people were trapped in the wreckage.

Teenage driver charged over NSW crash

A young mother was high on methamphetamine, disqualified from driving, and speeding when she ran a red light and T-boned another car, a court has heard.

Danielle Lewis, 26, from Port Noarlunga South, fled the scene of the crash where she left Rena Yaeger trapped and unconscious and Ms Yaeger’s passenger Jack Pearce injured after the crash on May 11 this year.

As bystanders ran to help Ms Yaeger and Mr Pearce, Lewis returned to her crashed car and retrieved a “personal item” before fleeing a second time – this time getting into a stolen car.

She was caught 45 minutes later and made immediate admissions to the crime.

On Monday, Lewis wept in the dock as victim-impact statements authored by Ms Yaeger, Mr Pearce and their families were read to the court.

District Court Judge Joanne Tracey heard Ms Yaeger had undergone surgery five times in fewer than three months, had her spleen removed, needed 95 stitches and required intensive treatment on her pelvis.

“My life is sad now, I don’t recognise myself any more,” she said. “I still have no answers, I don’t know if I ever will.

“I hope you can sort yourself out and your daughter can become your reason for living.”

The court heard Mr Pearce continued to relive the crash and would associate that night with the sound of breaking glass and the sight of Ms Yaeger’s head hitting the steering wheel.

The impact of the crash spread through the families of both Ms Yaeger and Mr Pearce.

Lewis read an emotional apology to the court – directly addressing the victims and their family.

“You must think I am a horrible person. I was in shock – I had no idea how badly I had hurt you,” she said.

“I am not a heartless criminal, but a scared young woman. I am sorry for ruining both your lives and for bringing shame and disappointment to my family and daughter – I cannot ask for your forgiveness because I cannot forgive myself.”

Lewis was remanded in custody after the crash and was charged with driving at dangerous speeds and causing harm through dangerous driving.

Stacey Carter, for Lewis, told the court her client had a bad driving history, but had all the reasons in the world to reform herself.

“This is the first time she has ever been placed in the Adelaide Women’s Prison,” she said.

“There are some very dangerous, very frightening people in there.”

A prosecutor told the court Lewis’ apologies and contrition had to be tempered against the fact she had refused to tell police who was driving the stolen car that picked her up after the crash.

Lewis will be sentenced next month.
