A young cyber security engineer allegedly injected his partner with methamphetamine and other drugs in a failed attempt to save her from a heroin overdose, a court has heard.

Ethan Ross, 27, has been charged with supplying or administering a drug of dependence after the body of his 26-year-old girlfriend Amy Bowden was found at their Redwood Park home on Thursday morning.

Opposing all forms of bail in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon, a police prosecutor alleged the young woman had overdosed on heroin, and in an effort to save her, Mr Ross messaged a drug dealer to drop off meth to “balance her out”.

The court heard Mr Ross had gone to a pharmacy the day before to buy naloxone – a drug used to reverse opioid overdoses.

When that didn’t work, he allegedly turned to other illicit substances to balance the “downer” she had taken with an “upper”.

“On the afternoon of the 7th of February, he messaged a person asking for meth so he could ‘shoot her with it’ and ‘pick her up’,” prosecutors said.

“He makes references to the deceased taking smack, and reversing a downer with an upper. He asked for a point of meth.”

Police said that at 5am, Mr Ross heard Ms Bowden snoring, but noticed she was unconscious and called an ambulance, which took two hours to arrive.

Despite attempts, she was not able to be revived and was declared dead at the scene.

Mr Ross allegedly told police after giving her the naloxone, he “mixed the methamphetamine and began injecting it into her”.

“Mr Ross, in his own words, gave quite a detailed explanation of how he administered that drug to the deceased,” a police prosecutor told the court.

“The charge is serious, and there’s an ongoing investigation that may result in more serious and further charges.”

Mr Ross’s lawyer told the court his client had no reason to abscond because he owns the home he and Ms Bowden were living in, and maintains stable employment in the defence industry.

“My client has been gainfully employed for some time,” he said.

“He works as a cyber security engineer with a defence force contractor. He has significant clearance which requires invasive investigation into one’s personal life, including prior offending, risks to the country – all those kinds of things.

“My understanding is that he has a job offer from Telstra, working in as cyber security engineer.”

He said Mr Ross had lived with Ms Bowden interstate, but moved them both back to South Australia to try and help her overcome a drug addiction.

“He believed it would be a better environment for her while she was struggling with addiction, so Mr Ross wanted to bring her back to a stable community where he felt things would be better for her. Unfortunately, that is not the way things have gone,” he said.

Magistrate Lana Chester adjourned the bail hearing, and Mr Ross will return to court at a later date.

According to a post made to his LinkedIn profile seven months ago, Mr Ross and his “partner” were “expecting”.

He completed a degree in IT at the University of South Australia in 2022, and recently worked as a development, security and operations engineer at Qantas, according to his LinkedIn.

Ms Bowden has been described by friends as a “really beautiful, loving human being”.

“This is just such a tragic thing to happen to the both of them,” a friend told The Advertiser at the scene on Friday.
