Staff and customers at a city karaoke bar have been forced to carry out a citizen’s arrest after a drunk man was allegedly acting disorderly at the venue.
About 10.50pm on Wednesday night, a 31-year-old Burton man entered the rush karaoke bar on Bank St and attempted to enter several rooms where other customers were singing.
Witnesses said the man was being disruptive before being confronted by a staff member.
The pair were involved in a short altercation before two other male customers stepped in to restrain him.
The incident was captured on video by another patron at the venue.
Victoria, who did not wish to give her last name, was singing in one of the rooms with friends when the altercation took place.
She said the man entered the venue at a similar time to her group and told them he was “going to rock” the place.
“We heard bashing against our karaoke door, so we looked out the little window and saw the worker and the suspect wrestling,” she said.
“We opened the door and that’s when other customers sort of jumped in to protect the worker and restrain him.”
While the staff member and other men were holding the patron down, the women called police.
“They all handled it really, really well,” she said.
“It all happened really fast, the police probably took five minutes to come and arrest him and take him away.”
The man was charged with disorderly behaviour.
He was bailed and will appear in court at a later date.
“I don’t think he really understood the seriousness of the situation, I remember him saying stuff to police that I found quite funny,” Victoria said.
While the staff member was shaken by the incident, he offered all the patrons who assisted an hour of free karaoke.
“That was awesome, we became friends with the other guys and started singing with them,” Victoria said.
“We go there all the time and this has never happened before. It was very random, especially for a Wednesday night.”
