An England fan has been arrested at The Drive after igniting a flare at the conclusion of the Matildas world cup semi-final loss.
The male fan was already being evicted by police after several alleged instances of unruly behaviour throughout the night.
However, as police walked him from the venue, he ran towards the exit and lit a flare moments before another group of officers tackled him to the ground.
The man – who received a gash to his face – was placed in handcuffs and loaded into a police vehicle near Telstra Plaza.
Security had already spoken to the man – who was wearing England colours – on numerous occasions throughout the night and was warned for threatening a group of teenagers who were watching the match.
After being placed on his final warning, he asked a security guard if he would be evicted if he jumped from the northern stand of The Drive to the ground level.
It wasn’t until the conclusion of the match that police became involved when the fan engaged in another verbal stoush with other spectators in the northern stand.
Police spoke to him for several minutes on the lower level, just moments before the arrest took place.
It was placed a sour note on an otherwise successful event with more than 8500 fans attending the two fan zones set-up in the city.
