Court places suppression order on South Australian prison guard accused of drug smuggling

A prison guard accused of attempting to smuggle drugs has appeared in court for the first time – but his identity has been suppressed.
The southern suburbs man appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with three counts of trafficking in a controlled drug.
A lawyer for the man asked the court to place an interim suppression order on his identity “for about a week” to allow them time to provide material supporting the order to the court.
The lawyer said she was “not in a position at this stage” to detail the reasons behind the need for a suppression order in open court.
Magistrate Michael Fotheringham granted the interim order to suppress the name, image and anything tending to identify the defendant.
Police Corrections detectives arrested the man and three women over the alleged smuggling in July.
At the time of his arrest police alleged the guard had tried to smuggle suboxone, a drug used to treat opiod dependence, amphetamine and cocaine.
None of the accused have yet entered pleas.
The accused prison guard returns to court later this month, ahead of a charge determination hearing next June.
He did not comment on the allegations when approached outside court.
