Australia's Shame: Horrifying trend in violence against women

A man charged with the attempted stabbing murder of his wife in the Mid North has been ordered to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

Lindsay Raymond Bassani appeared via video link in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday where he pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and aggravated causing serious harm with intent.

He was arrested and charged after police responded to a violent disturbance at a home in Clare at about 7pm on April 8 and found the woman had a stab wound to her neck.

The mother of two was taken to the Clare Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Mr Bassani, 43, was also found to have stab wounds to his abdomen which required surgery. Police have previously said the wounds were self-inflicted.

On Thursday, Olivia Fantis, for Mr Bassani said her client conceded there was a case to answer but would be pleading not guilty.

Magistrate David McLeod ordered Mr Bassani to stand trial.

Previously, the court has heard Mr Bassani and his wife co-owned a gym together in Clare and had separated after they had been married “for some time” amid allegations of infidelity.

It had heard he threatened to kill his wife and she now “fears for safety”.

The court was also told Mr Bassani had travelled from where he was staying in Adelaide to his wife’s other workplace earlier on the day of the alleged stabbing and demanded to know “who she was sleeping with”.

During that hearing, Director of Public Prosecutions, Martin Hinton QC, told the court Mr Bassani’s wife had described him as “controlling, obsessed, paranoid and jealous, and that description captures what occurred on the night of the offence”.

In a separate earlier hearing, prosecutors had told the court Bassani “cornered her in the kitchen, he grabbed her by the hair, pulled her forward and dragged her down the hallway into the bedroom”.

That hearing was also told the woman had locked herself and their two children in the bathroom and called triple-0. She waited there until emergency services arrived.

Mr Bassani, who was refused release on bail last week, will next appear in court in October.
