A man charged with attempting to murder his wife after stabbing her in the neck at Clare last week had visited her workplace in the hours before the attack, a court has heard.
Lindsay Raymond Bassani, 42, allegedly stabbed his wife after an argument about “infidelities in their marriage” on April 8.
He was due to appear in court on Friday but was undergoing surgery at the time for self-inflicted stab wounds – and again did not appear in court on Monday as he remains in hospital.
A police prosecutor told the Adelaide Magistrates Court the couple had been married “for some time”, but separated after allegations of infidelity.
She said Bassani was “staying in Adelaide” but travelled to Clare and “turned up” at his 39-year-old wife’s workplace.
“The accused contacted the complainant on the morning of the offending, which she was ignoring because she was at work,” the prosecutor said.
She said the alleged victim later returned home and “it was like the accused had flicked a switch”.
“He cornered her in the kitchen, he grabbed her by her hair, pulled her forward and dragged her down the hallway into the bedroom,” prosecutors said.
She said Bassani’s wife told him their relationship was over and he needed to leave.
The court last week heard Bassani threatened to kill the woman if she left the relationship, before stabbing her in the neck. She locked herself and two children in the bathroom while awaiting help from emergency services.
Director of Public Prosecutions Martin Hinton QC, who was in the court to appear as prosecutor on a different case, asked if the matter could be adjourned for a week to allow him to consider it.
“I imagine we are heading fast towards a charge determination,” he said.
The date for a decision on which charges would proceed against Bassani had been set for December, but Mr Hinton said that could likely occur much sooner.
Bassani’s lawyer also asked for an adjournment of a week to prepare a bail application and obtain more information about the injuries to Bassani’s wife.
Bassani is facing charges of attempted murder, threats to kill and aggravated assault. He is yet to enter any pleas.
Magistrate Simon Smart adjourned the hearing to next week.
