A good Samaritan who was killed in his Parafield Gardens home overnight was trying to protect a woman who had fled a domestic violence incident, who told him her partner “will murder me” if he didn’t help her, court documents allege.

William “Bill” Brassil, 65, was killed after a man – whose identity is suppressed – allegedly threw a flat screen TV, a paver and a tree branch at his head, killing him within minutes.

In the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon, the man appeared via phone from his hospital bed at the Lyell McEwin Hospital where he was taken after the alleged incident unfolded on Chesser St in Parafield Gardens on Thursday night.

Police prosecutors successfully applied for the man’s identity to be suppressed because further witnesses to the altercation were still being sought.

However, in documents released to The Advertiser by the court revealed the horrific circumstances allegedly leading up to Mr Brassil’s death.

Police allege the 30-year-old man, who has since been charged with manslaughter, had allegedly been arguing with a former domestic partner at about 8pm on Thursday evening.

That former partner told police that he began arguing and shouting at her, before she left the address and ran “up and down the street asking for help”.

“She stopped outside (Mr Brassil’s home) and spoke to him. He asked if she was okay,” the documents allege.

“She asked him to call police as (the man) was screaming at her. She states she observed the accused advancing towards her, so she jumped over the fence and into the victim’s front yard.

“The accused picked up a brick and threw it at her, but missed.”

Mr Brassil’s partner, Kym Clausen, allegedly told police the woman had told them the man “is going to murder me”.

“The male appeared carrying a black television screen in both hands. He then walked along the fence line and threw it at Brassil,” the documents allege.

“The male picked up another paver and threw it.”

Police allege CCTV vision, captured at the property, shows the man throwing both the television and a paver at Mr Brassil’s head.

The man has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault causing harm, which relate to the woman, Mr Brassil and Mr Brassil’s partner.

They further allege a tree branch was used to assault one of the people.

Magistrate Joanna Martin on Friday afternoon adjourned the matter, and the man is expected to make a bail application at his next appearance in September.
