Seven Pitbull-cross puppies have been returned to their owner after they were stolen from a Morphett Vale property last week.

Between Wednesday and Thursday, the six-week-old litter of puppies was allegedly stolen from a Morphett Vale home.

Just after midnight on Saturday, police searched a Christies Beach address and found two of the litter safe and well.

A third puppy was later handed in to the local police station.

The remaining four puppies have since been found after police launched a public appeal for them to be returned to their owner.

A 37-year-old man Christies Beach man was arrested on Friday and bailed to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates court on May 23.

It comes as a new government scheme was launched to closely monitor dog and cat breeders to ensure they are complying with the law when engaging in the sale of pets.

Deputy Premier Susan Close announced on Saturday a new breeder education and compliance program to inform breeders of their legal requirements and police illegal breeding.

Sellers whose advertisements do not comply with the Dog and Cat Management Act or are found to be scamming buyers will be reported. Penalties of up to $5000 apply.

Meanwhile, a police dog was put in the bizarre position of arresting a fellow canine when officers were called to a Southern Suburbs property on Friday night.

At around 5am on Saturday morning, patrols were called to a Kurralta Park street after reports of torches being seen at homes under construction.

Nearby patrols attended and with the help of PD Rusty arrested three people and a Rottweiler.

A 25-year-old man with a Rottweiler were detained while PD Rusty and his handler searched the property.

PD Rusty then found two women hiding inside and walked them outside into the waiting arms of officers.

The man and the two women, a 23-year-old from Morphett Vale and a 24-year-old from Marino, were all arrested and charged with being unlawfully on premises.

The Rottweiler was left in the care of a person known to the group.
