72-year-old cyclist dies has after crash in Port Pirie South

A grandfather on a bike has been killed after a collision with a ute at Port Pirie South.

A cyclist and beloved grandfather, who previously survived a road crash that killed his friend, has died after being struck while riding.

Emergency services were called to Abbatoirs Rd at Port Pirie South after reports of a collision between a Mitsubishi ute and a cyclist just after 9:20am on Tuesday.

The cyclist, identified as Risdon Park man John Dennis, died at the scene.

The driver of the ute, a 30-year-old Port Pirie West man, was not injured and has assisted police with inquiries.

His vehicle was towed with a shattered windscreen as well as damage to the bonnet and front bumper.

In 2016, Mr Dennis was riding with friend and fellow cycling club member Stephen Eberhard on Germain Rd, Solomontown, when a drug-impaired truck driver collided with them.

Mr Eberhard died at the scene, while Mr Dennis and club president Hugh Paterson were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Port Pirie Regional Council Mayor Leon Stephens said he was “saddened” by the fatal incident.

“We’ve lost another life today,” Mr Stephens said. “I’m saddened that someone has lost their life for just living their life.”

It is understood the man was a life member of the Port Pirie Cycling Club.

Major crash officers attended the scene to determine the cause of the collision.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area where possible as road closures are in place between Spencer Highway and Waits Road.

The man is the 91st life lost on South Australian roads this year, compared with 57 at the same time in 2022.
