Brooke Lee Haynes sentenced for Hindley St attack, spitting on police officer

A “hardworking” stay-at-home mum has been sentenced after a night out without her child turned into a wild fight on Hindley St.

A young mum who spat on a police officer after assaulting a man on Hindley St has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Brooke Lee Haynes appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday where she entered guilty pleas to a count of aggravated commit assault with a weapon and two counts of assault a worker.

Peter Hill, for Haynes, previously told the court his client and her partner were enjoying a night off from their son who turns one next month.

“They had a night off from their son … they have responsibly caught an Uber into town but parents who don’t get away much, the night’s got out of hand clearly due to intoxication,” he said.

“We say it’s not the case that this is a lady with drinking problem or a drug problem, she’s simply a hardworking stay-at-home mother.

“The (police officer sustained) a broken arm and that’s not the subject of any charges, the two assault police come by way of two allegations of spitting.”

Police allege patrols were called to the popular party strip just before 1am after reports a fight had broken out between a small group of people.

As police intervened, the officer fell to the ground and injured her arm. She was then taken to hospital for undergo treatment.

A man and woman, both 26 and from O’Halloran Hill, were subsequently arrested.

Police allege that during the arrest the woman spat on officers.

Haynes’ co-accused and partner will appear for the first time over the matter next month.

Haynes was sentenced to three months imprisonment, which was suspended upon her entering a good behaviour bond of 18 months.
