A young Basketball SA referee and Adelaide Hills cafe manager has confessed to child sex crimes after police busted him planning an Adelaide Oval “bathroom meetup” with a child.
Rishan Bright Wade Perera, 25, in the District Court on Friday confirmed his guilty pleas to knowingly possessing and producing child exploitation material, as well as three counts of communicating to make a child amenable to sexual activity.
In May last year, police alleged Perera had been planning to meet up with a teenage boy before his arrest.
“There are serious allegations, and police received information that he had been communicating online with a 14-year-old male child and had arranged to meet the child at the Adelaide Oval for the purpose of (engaging in sexual acts) with the child in the bathroom,” police prosecutors previously told the Magistrates Court.
“Further information was received that he was accessing child exploitation material of children under the age of 10 involved in sexual acts. Perera was further charged with three counts of gross indecency, which he also pleaded guilty to.
According to his social media, Perera, of Mitchell Park, attended the Australian Science and Maths School before studying philosophy and politics at the University of Adelaide.
He was also a basketball referee at Basketball Australia, according to his Facebook page.
The 25-year-old was silent as he appeared in court via video link from prison, with his lawyer asking a date be set in February for sentencing submissions.
His lawyer said a psychological report for Perera had been ordered, but was not yet ready.
He will return to court next month.
