St Peters Bakehouse break-in: Dancing thieves

A popular eastern suburbs bakery has been broken into, with CCTV footage showing the thieves smashing their way in then dancing, giving the finger and pocketing cash from the till.

Police were called to the St Peters Bakehouse and Coffee Shop on Seventh Ave after the alarm was activated at 3.25am.

The front door was forced open and one cash register stolen from inside the bakery.

Police said cash had been stolen from a second cash register, which could not be removed.

Manager Ryan Obst, 35, said “break-ins are never easy on anyone” and was thankful no staff or customers were around to get hurt.

“Break-ins can be a pretty scary experience so safety of our staff and customers is a big thing, so it’s lucky it wasn’t during the day,” Mr Obst said.

CCTV shows the thieves entering through the front door which they “smashed through” before heading behind the counter to search the tills.

It also shows one dancing on camera and raising the middle finger, while another pocketed cash from the till, and a third accomplice is seen searching the back room.

The thieves nicked off with one till and cash from a second with the total amount estimated to be “anything from $300 to $500,” said Mr Obst.

“They took one (till) and then just decided, ‘ah we’ll take the whole tray’, and then the alarms scared them off,” he said.

“And one of them ran back in and took two Powerades out the fridge before they shot off in their car up the street.”

Mr Obst said there had been another break-in about a year ago which was caught on camera as well, showing a couple of people jimmying the front door open.

“That one was a bit suspect as they went for our safe but this one you can tell that they’ve just gone straight to the till and then searching the place,” he said.

Despite the break-in it was business as usual for the Seventh Ave bakery with many regulars stopping by for a morning coffee.

“It’s just another day, just another day to provide for the community and customers around,” Mr Obst said.

“We’ll just kick on.”

Five suspects, who were wearing dark-coloured clothing, are reported to have jumped into a getaway car parked on Stephens Tce before fleeing the scene.

Police said no one was hurt during the Tuesday morning break-in and could not give an estimate on the amount of cash stolen.
