A rescue operation is underway for a solo sailor off the coast of South Australia with wild weather lashing the area.
About 4.20pm Friday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) received an emergency beacon notification from a sailor on-board a Queensland-registered boat in the Great Australian Bight.
The 6.5m sailing vessel’s last known location was about 630km west of Kangaroo Island and 740km south east of Esperance in Western Australia.
In a statement, AMSA said it had issued an emergency broadcast and diverted a merchant vessel, which was expected to reach the sailing boat’s last known location by Saturday morning.
A Perth-based rescue aircraft had reached the boat’s location about 7.15pm and was monitoring the vessel’s situation and communicating with the sailor via radio.
Winds were estimated at between 100km/h and 110km/h and swells believed to be between 8m and 9m in the area.
