Residents of a Murray Bridge caravan park have been left in shock by the hit-run death of a woman who regularly stayed there.
The victim, 40, was killed when she was struck by a car on the Old Princes Highway at Murray Bridge East about 9.45pm on Thursday night.
A witness reportedly saw her walking along the middle of Mitchell Ave about half an hour earlier.
The victim then visited a petrol station just before she was fatally struck, according to 7NEWS.
One woman staying at the nearby Avoca Dell Caravan Park said it was “a very sombre day” there.
“We are all shocked,” she said. “It hits you when it is someone you have seen around and said ‘hello’ to a few times.”
The park resident, who did not want to be named, said police officers were seen at the park from about 12.30am and they seized a ute there about 4.30am.
The ute was loaded on to a tilt truck and driven from the park under police escort.
Police denied removing any vehicle from the park and said no arrests had been made.
Family and friends took to social media to mourn the loss of the victim.
“My aunty you will be loved and missed, I love you forever and always,” one post said.
“RIP my beautiful sister … you’ll forever be in my heart,” another said.
Murray Bridge Mayor Brenton Lewis said waking up to the news was like a “knife in the guts”.
“For the driver not to stop, I just cannot handle that,” he said.
“This type of thing is horrible anywhere at anytime and doesn’t happen often in a regional centre … I hope they catch whoever did this.”
Other locals also responded angrily, expressing their disbelief the driver did not stop.
“Best hand yourself in before they catch up to you … sorry to hear about the woman, RIP and condolences to her family,” one person posted online.
It is understood the victim was a frequent visitor to the caravan park, which is not far from the scene of the incident.
An SA Police spokesperson said no vehicle had been located in relation to the incident.
“We are still searching for the vehicle and the driver involved and we are appealing for anyone who might have dashcam footage to come forward,” they said.
The highway was closed for several hours on Thursday night while Major Crash investigators examined the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The fatality was the 58th life lost on South Australian roads this year, compared with 79 at the time last year.
