Police hunt driver after woman killed in hit-run crash in Murraylands

A woman has died after being struck by a car at Murray Bridge East overnight. Police are searching for the driver of the vehicle.

A woman has died after a hit-and-run crash in the Murraylands on Thursday night.

Around 9.45pm, law enforcement and emergency services were called to Old Princes Hwy at Murray Bridge East to reports a woman had been struck by a car.

The 40-year-old woman from Murray Bridge died at the scene and police say the vehicle failed to stop after the collision.

7NEWS reported one person saw the woman as they passed half an hour before the accident on Mitchell Ave, she was allegedly walking in the middle of the road and seemed oblivious to cars.

It is understood she went to a petrol station, where there was a commotion. Minutes later she was fatally hit.

Tributes for the woman from her family have been posted on social media, one saying “My aunty, you’ll be loved and missed. I love you forever and always.”

The highway was closed for several hours while Major Crash Investigators examined the scene, but has since reopened.

Investigators are continuing to hunt for the driver of the vehicle.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The woman’s death is the 58th life lost on South Australian roads this year, compared with 79 at the time last year.
