A man has erupted in a violent, profanity-laden rage in court after being jailed for nearly a decade for attacking an innocent motorist and assaulting police on an Adelaide beach.

On Friday, Andrew Kevin Gollan, 25, shouted, swore at and made threatening gestures towards Judge Heath Barklay as he was sentenced in the District Court for his violent assaults, which included throwing a scooter at police during an arrest last January.

“It’s bulls**t, I don’t listen to bulls**t,” he said. “It was on camera and you’re still going on with your bulls**t story, mate.

“Yeah, mute me you d**khead, what’s muting me gonna do? I’ll f**king break ya,” he said as Judge Barklay asked court staff to turn off his microphone.

As he raged on, he motioned “as if to shoot” the judge with a shotgun, Judge Barklay said.

“You were at all times the aggressor, what you told (the psychologist) when you met him was a pack of lies,” Judge Barklay said during sentencing.

The court heard the forensic psychologist had assessed Gollan as having a “high risk of violent offending” and may meet criteria under the High Risk Offenders Act requiring extended community supervision.

“There is an element of speculation about that, however – (the psychologist) identifying that possibility before you have been sentenced, perhaps highlights how much you need to do before the community is protected from you,” Judge Barklay said.

His Honour remarked his violent outbursts in court were a good example of his “explosive” anger.

“You have consistently demonstrated a tendency to respond with explosive anger to real or perceived provocation from others,” Judge Barklay said.

“Today’s sentencing hearing is probably a good example of that.”

Judge Barklay remarked Gollan had also – during two previous court hearings – made threats towards him and blamed his victims, saying they would “start the s**t then act scared … them f**king dogs”.

“(Mr Gollan) is now motioning as if to shoot me with a shotgun, or something like that,” Judge Barklay said on Friday.

Gollan was arrested after an “erratic” and “violent” attack on an innocent man near the Christies Beach Hotel in January 2024.

He was seen on CCTV randomly smashing a car’s window with a scooter before striking a 63-year-old Morphett Vale man in the head, also with the scooter, when the man got out of the car.

The victim sustained fractures to his skull, lacerations to his face and ear and injuries to his back.

Dramatic footage from body-worn police cameras arresting Gollan showed the violent assault that left one officer injured.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting a worker and one count each of resisting police officer and in doing so cause harm, aggravated causing harm with intent and damaging a building or motor vehicle.

The court heard Gollan had been diagnosed with alcohol, opioids, cannabis and stimulant use disorder along with post-traumatic stress and anti-social and borderline personality disorders.

Judge Barklay sentenced Gollan to nine years in jail with a non-parole period of seven years, two months and 13 days.

The sentence was backdated to January 23, 2024.
