A man accused of seriously injuring an innocent man with a scooter and assaulting two police officers had a warrant out for his arrest for almost a year at the time of the incident and has 121 prior convictions, a court has heard.
Andrew Kevin Gollan, 24, of Morphettville, appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court, via video link from custody, on Wednesday following his arrest the day before.
A police prosecutor told the court CCTV footage from the Christie’s Beach Hotel captures Mr Gollan randomly approaching the vehicle of a 63-year-old man before smashing his window with a scooter and then hitting the victim on the head with it.
The alleged victim - 63-year-old Morphett Vale man - suffered a fractured skull and was conveyed to the Flinders Medical Centre.
Mr Gollan was notably agitated during the hearing, yelling profanities and talking over Magistrate Natalie Browne.
“Yes, woo, yes… f*** yes CCTV footage of him driving over my foot,” he screamed out.
“You need to be quiet Mr Gollan,” Ms Browne responded.
“Yes, sorry, I apologise for that,” he said.
The police prosecutor said the accused was found by police, with his girlfriend who was considered a co-accused but not yet charged, at a nearby beach where the other offences occurred.
“The defendant swung punches towards police,” she said.
“(The other officer) tried to take hold of the defendant’s arm and he punched her to the face.
“At this time they are entering the ocean and when (one of the officer’s) is punched to the face she falls backwards into the ocean losing her balance and being knocked off her feet.
“The defendant then picks up the scooter and then throws it with force to the officer and he struck him with the scooter.
“The defendant’s girlfriend intervenes and effectively hinders the arrest and there is a physical struggle between the defendant as he’s arrested.”
The police prosecutor said one officer sustained a laceration to the eye, a broken nose and a fractured left knee.
The other did not sustain any injuries.
The police prosecutor also said Mr Gollan has a number of active warrants for his arrest - one of which relates to an alleged robbery in which he was wearing a mask and threatened a man with a gun before running off with $500 in coins.
Defence counsel for Mr Gollan said her client suffers from foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, ADHD and neurodevelopment disorder.
“He very firmly contests the charges - (in relation to the first victim) he says his version of events will be backed up by his partner … Mr Gollan says this person ran over his foot … and came out of the car with a knife,” she said.
Ms Browne denied the application for bail and Mr Gollan was remanded in custody.
He will next appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court later this year.
A police press release said Mr Gollan’s co-accused, a 22-year-old Morphettville woman, was arrested for alleged disorderly behaviour and hinder police.
She was bailed to appear at the Christies Beach Magistrates Court in February.
