Alleged hit-run driver Travis Turner tried to cover up Kilburn cyclist crash, court told

A driver tried to “cover up” his crash with a cyclist by driving off and “altering” his van at his brother’s house, a court has heard.

A driver who allegedly crashed into a cyclist and fled then “altered” his vehicle after the impact “to cover up” the crime he had committed, a court has heard.

On Tuesday, a prosecutor urged the Adelaide Magistrates Court to reject Travis Wayne Turner’s bid for home detention bail.

She said Mr Turner wanted to live with his brother, but that address was unsuitable for reasons tied directly to the allegations.

“The brother’s address is where the defendant stored the vehicle and altered it to cover up that this crime had been committed, including changing the number plates,” she said.

“In any event, we would be opposed to bail in any form because he has a lengthy and appalling driving history, as well as 11 prior breaches of bail.”

Mr Turner, 45, of Somerton Park, was charged with one count of causing harm by dangerous driving over an alleged hit-run at Kilburn in February 2023.

At the time, SA Police alleged he was behind the wheel of a white Toyota HiAce with interstate plates that crashed into the rear of a female cyclist, 44, of Mile End.

They further allege the woman came off her bike and collided with a nearby street sign, while the Toyota’s driver stopped, approached her, then drove away.

On Tuesday, a duty solicitor said Mr Turner’s original proposed bail address was “no longer available”.

They offered his brother’s home as an alternative and asked the case be adjourned until his lawyer was available to make submissions.

The prosecutor asked the bail bid be rejected immediately, but Magistrate Brett Dixon said he could not do that.

“The problem we have is that counsel has been briefed to act for Mr Turner and they are not available until the next occasion,” he said.

“I’m quite happy to hear your submissions next time, when counsel is here.”

He remanded Mr Turner in custody for two weeks.
