A man will face court on Monday after allegedly attacking two police officers on a bus.

At midday on Friday, police officers were called to a supermarket on Hampstead Rd in Clearview after reports a man had been threatening staff and customers with a watering can he said was filled with petrol – he was also holding a lighter.

Police said he then threw the can – which was only filled with water – at two people before boarding a bus headed to the CBD.

That bus was then intercepted by police, but when they boarded the vehicle the man allegedly assaulted two officers by biting and hitting them.

The officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by paramedics, and the 30-year-old Northfield man was arrested and charged with assaulting a prescribed emergency worker and resisting arrest.

He was refused police bail and is expected to face the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

This incident comes after SA Police said they would be watching with “particular interest” violent assaults on officers and how their cases progress through the judicial system.

In early December, 2023, the Police Commissioner Grant Stevens revealed he was “very concerned” over the outcome of the Raina Jane Cruise matter.

Cruise was found guilty of intentionally causing harm to Constable Anthea Beck by scalping her and kicking the pregnant officer on October 17, 2021.

Although the District Court had deemed Cruise’s crimes inexcusable and worthy of a three-year and eight month sentence – the sentence was ultimately suspended.

The Department of Public Prosecutions has appealed Cruise’s sentence.

Later, on December 21, a female Port Augusta police officer suffered a serious arm injury after being allegedly attacked by a man with a sword – she was later flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital to undergo surgery.

The alleged perpetrator of the assault, 30-year-old Hamish Taylor, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following investigations.
