A CFS volunteer says the family of a young man killed when his dirt bike hit a pot hole have been shattered by his sudden death.

The family of a young man who died after crashing his dirt bike at a private property in the state’s Mid North are “bewlidered” and “shattered” by the incident.

The crash happened on Sunday, in Maude, west of Morgan, about 5.30pm, with police, paramedics and a medical helicopter called.

Braiden Schiller, 25, could not be saved and he died at the scene.

His friends took to social media on Tuesday to remember him as a generous and loyal friend.

Local police are investigating the circumstances around the man’s death, and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.

CFS volunteer David Lindner, who lives on Schomburgk Rd – a few kilometres from the scene of the accident – got a pager message about 5.30pm alerting him to the accident.

The sheep farmer, 57, rushed to the paddock and helped to coordinate a helicopter landing, but said the young man did not survive long enough to be flown to hospital.

He said the victim, who was related to the owners of the rural property and who do not live there full time, hit a pothole among scrub and “flew off” the bike.

“There were only a couple of others there (when I arrived) that weren’t emergency services but it was the normal reaction, they (family) were shattered,” Mr Lindner said.

“They were just shattered... bewildered is probably the best word for it, it was just that shock setting in.”

Mr Lindner has lived in Maude his whole life and is a fourth generation farmer.

“Doing this life we’re used to death, we deal with a lot of dead animals ... but when it’s human it’s always different,” he said.

Mid Murray mayor Dave Burgess said the situation was tragic.

“It’s a message that we need to take care when we’re out having some fun,” Mr Burgess said.

“I’m feeling sympathy for the family at this time.

“It impacts on the people in the town, nearby properties, and emergency services that have to respond.

“The message is go out and have fun on your property… but safety is of the utmost importance, we have to understand we’re not bulletproof.”

It follows another nearby fatal crash at a Lindley property, about 13km east of Maude. A Campbelltown man, 26, died when a ute rolled on March 6.

The driver, a Rostrevor man, 29, was later charged with causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving.

He faced court in May.

Mr Lindner said it was sad to see another crash nearby.

“They ride (motorbikes) them differently than I do. I ride with a purpose, they go out there and ride like hell, basically, a lot of the time, so the risk is much higher,” he said.

“It’s a hard one, because that’s just what people want to do – ride them and ride them fast, and take that risk.”

Morgan publican at the Commercial Hotel, Keith Bovingdon, said it was sad to hear of the crash.

“It doesn’t matter what you say, they’re still going to do it,” Mr Bovingdon said.

“I just feel sorry for them (the victim’s family).”

Mr Bovingdon’s son was involved in a serious crash on the Port Wakefield Highway at Waterloo Corner at age 17, which killed three.

Now 37, his son still walks with a cane and has problems with movement on the right side of his body.
