A young man killed in a dirt bike crash in the state’s Mid North has been remembered as a generous and loyal friend, as it emerges he was on a first date at the time of his death.

Braiden Schiller, 25, hit a pothole on his dirt bike while herding goats about 5.30pm Sunday at a property on Schomburgk Rd in Maude, northwest of Morgan.

Paramedics, police and CFS volunteers rushed to Mr Schiller’s aid but he died at the scene.

James Waldhuter, a close friend of Mr Schiller, said their friendship group were in shock.

“It’s pretty hard to believe … it sort of doesn’t really seem real. It’s almost like everyone’s playing a big joke,” Mr Waldhuter told The Advertiser.

Mr Schiller was a diesel mechanic and had this year opened a business, The Pines Mechanical, in Kapunda, his home town.

Mr Waldhuter remembered his friend as a generous hard worker, who loved cars and Great Northern beers.

“He’d never be shy to give anyone a hand, he was a really good bloke,” he said.

He said Mr Schiller and his father, Richard, were “inseparable”.

Mr Waldhuter, 16, said a group of friends were going to Mr Schiller’s business in coming days to help his father with finishing outstanding jobs.

“We’re all going to go up there … and will have a drink and remember him.”

He said Mr Schiller had just had his first lunch date with a woman on Sunday, and went to the property in Maude to herd goats with her and members of his family.

The owner of the property Mr Schiller was riding on, Marilyn Phillips, said he used their land with consent to hunt kangaroos and catch goats.

“When we get thunderstorms the whole terrain changes … so you need to always be careful,” Ms Phillips said. “It’s just a timely warning.”

She and her husband Mark met Mr Schiller a few years ago, and said he was a “nice bloke”.

“He was always a very polite, courteous person,” she said.

“He seems to have a lot of friends, he was a guy who lived life to the fullest … it’s (his death has) hit a lot of people, he was such a young person.”

Dozens took to social media to express their heartbreak in losing Mr Schiller, with one man saying he was “an amazing mate.

“Mate you have always seem to have been invincible and taken everything in a stride,” he wrote.

Another woman wrote that Mr Schiller’s sudden death reminded her of how short life was.

“(It’s) So unfair that it takes a devastating accident to happen to remind us just how short life really is,” she wrote.

“Life won’t be the same for all those who were lucky enough to know you.”

One man remembered Braiden as a “beautiful soul, a loyal friend and an awesome bloke”.

“There are few words that described the tragedy of a young life lost,” he wrote

“My heart goes out to your family and close friends, fly high old friend.”
