BIRTHDAYS and group dinners are so much fun. But when those unknown friends you might never see again are matching the laughs with $20 cocktails at the other end of the table, it can get expensive. They are bound to be the ones to hoot, “let’s just split the bill”.
Lesson learned, a long time ago: Choose a spot where the meals are varied, the drink options cover all bases, and each person or couple in the group can order and pay as they go.
So, it was a smart call to Fedora’s at the Hilton Hotel, in Hilton, where you order meals and drinks at the bar.
We start with a few compromises. The birthday girl lashes out even though the chips cannot be made gluten free. And one craving for a chicken caesar salad is abandoned. Admittedly it’s a fancier “almond caesar”, with creamy almond dressing, chickpeas, tomato and red onion, so not even close to the original. It’s $19, but to make it more recognisable by adding chicken, $5, egg, $2, anchovies, $2, bacon or prosciutto, $3, those cocktails are looking like cheap treats.
From here, it’s all good. We have ordered at the bar, and it’s busy, yet the meals are cleverly delivered all at once.
The wagyu burger, $22, instead of that salad, doesn’t disappoint. As with the caesar promise, there’s evidence of real effort in the kitchen here. It’s a lofty burger with a loose and juicy pattie, free-range egg, double-smoked bacon, salad and just a bit too much onion jam. On the side are three ambitious smears of mustard, tomato, and ranch dressings, plus pickles. So many options and it’s a feast.
Generosity also reigns in pink charred lamb, and gluten-free thick, tender fresh squid.
Kitchen love extends to dessert, a lip-puckering chunky rhubarb pie by keen dessert chef Parvez Ansari with a fresh strawberry coulis, the pastry short, with ice cream, also housemade. What a brilliant pub-night finish.
