The partnership of Amy Bull and Tenille Gray in the shooting circle, is quickly forging Tango as an unsung contender in the Netball SA Premier League.

The dynamic duo operated in perfect harmony for Tango, as they blew Newton Jaguars off the floor in an impressive final quarter at Netball SA Stadium on Friday.

It is an impressive improvement for the pair who only joined forces for the first time this season when Gray arrived at the club from South Adelaide in the off-season.

Bull finished with 39 goals, while Gray added 21 of her own, as Tango rolled through the Jaguars 60-42.

Tango have now notched two wins on the trot to draw level with their opponents next week, Garville, in fifth spot on the ladder behind the Premier League top sides.

While they were dominant across the floor, it was the work of their weapons up front, in particular Gray who was impressive with the ball in hand, that made the most difference.

Newton Jaguars managed to show some fight immediately after the half-time break to win the third term and reduce the deficit to 10 goals heading into the final quarter.

But that was a short respite for the winless Jaguars, who faced a 19-point barrage in the final quarter as Tango danced their way to a comprehensive win.

Preview: Tango searching for perfect formula in year of change

In the midst of a tough season where ‘so many brand new girls had never played together or in the top league’, Tango are looking at something unique against Newton Jaguars on Friday night - two wins in a row.

The club, which finished third last year, has won just two games in 2023 after experiencing a list change overhaul in the lead-up to the season, but both of those wins have come in the past four games, including a 55-43 success over Metro Jets last week.

“We’ve been pretty realistic with our approach to the season, we knew it would be a tough year with the amount of new players we’ve got,” head coach Andrew Plenty said.

“We’re quite happy with how we’ve responded after facing South Adelaide and Matrics in the first couple rounds, but we know we still have a lot of work to do.

“Our girls are talented and our best is competitive, but we need to keep trying to be consistent and string four quarters together. Our first half against Jets was probably the best netball we’ve played so far, but we dropped off a bit.”

Tango lost multiple players in the pre-season, including reigning league MVP goal attack Jess Paradiso, but still managed to bring in strong players such as goal attack Tenille Gray and shooter Amy Bull, who has 173 goals so far this year.

Plenty said this team needed to gain more Premier League experience to be truly competitive.

“There’s so many brand new girls who have never played together or in the Premier League – I think we’ve only got 69 games of Premier League experience at the moment,” he said.

“We know it’s going to take some time and we need to keep bonding, keep gelling and be open and honest with each other about what we can do to improve going forward.

Tango are eyeing a second win a row for the first time this season.

“We’re very happy where we are considering the changes, but we know there’s still a lot to be done.”

The clash with Newton Jaguars will be the second time the clubs meet this season, with Tango winning the previous matchup.

A win could propel the club to finals contention and Plenty said the team was confident of a result.

“Our last meeting was a tough game but we thought it was winnable. We stuck to our structures and executed to get the win,” he said.

“We didn’t do it in four quarters, we did it in patches, but we still gain confidence from that result heading into Friday’s game.”
