The four South Australian drivers had mixed results on Saturday, with impressive performances for two of them and days to forget for the others.
Team National Pharmacies’ driver Nick Percat said his car had “pretty good race pace,” allowing him to gain a position from his qualifying spot, to finish in seventh. He said drivers might have had it “pretty easy” in the hot conditions, compared to other people working at the track, as they had cool suits and were fit for the task.
“My off-season was mega, I prepared that well,” he said “It was probably the easiest Adelaide 500 that I’ve done, to be honest.”
Matt Stone Racing’s Todd Hazelwood recorded his best-result in top-tier Supercars, finishing in 12th. He had qualified 21st, and while he gained a few places through other cars’ misfortunes, he also made up some through pure pace.
Freightliner Racing driver Tim Slade tried a strategy call to move himself up the grid from a mid-pack start, taking a pit stop at the end of his first lap, which initially paid off. However he finished 17th.
Mobil 1 Mega Racing driver Scott Pye failed to finish after his Holden Commodore was severely damaged in an incident on lap 26. He was an unlucky passer-by after Lee Holdsworth lost control at Turn 7 and lodged his Ford Mustang into the tyre wall.
Pye came round the corner and found he had nowhere to drive, clipping Holdsworth’s car as he, too, stopped in the tyre bundle.
