Brad Jones Racing rookie Macauley Jones says he was nothing more than a passenger after he lost control of his car and ploughed into a tyre wall in a frightening smash at the Adelaide 500.
In what he described as the biggest crash of his career, the Holden driver was lucky to walk away shaken, but otherwise unhurt in the massive impact that forced an end to Saturday morning practice.
Jones’ car cannoned off the track at turn nine after suffering brake failure and slammed into the tyre wall backwards before doing an aerial 360 and crashing into another tyre barrier.
The rear end of Jones’ car was completely torn off in the smash that left the BJR crew with a massive job ahead to get the car back on track.
Jones was cleared of any injuries by trackside medical staff, but admits he was left rattled after the impact.
“(I’m) a little bit shaken up. It was obviously a massive accident, probably the biggest one I’ve had for sure,’’ Jones said.
“It’s never a good thing when you lose brakes, especially at the end of a straight like that.
“You are going at such a high speed there that it was probably lucky that the wall was so far away. It felt like it was in a bit of slow motion going backwards down the road there, but it’s never a fun thing when you can’t see where you’re going and you’re going at that speed.
“It definitely felt like it was the biggest impact I’ve had for sure. It was lucky it was a tyre wall and not a concrete wall as well.’’
Jones said there had been no indication earlier of the brake failure that was about to hit and throw his opening race of the season into chaos.
“(There were) no issues. I was on first flying lap of the last outing and it was all going well until that point,’’ Jones said.
“I hit the brake pedal, it seemed like it was all there at the start and then it started to fade away as soon as I hit peak pressure and I was a passenger from there.’’
The son of former racer and team owner Brad Jones, the 24-year-old is entering his first full-time season in Supercars with the Albury-based outfit after racing as a co-driver in the enduros.
“It’s not the way that we wanted to start the rookie season, but hopefully we can get (the car) prepared and, if not tonight, hopefully be out there tomorrow,’’ Jones said.
Brad Jones was shattered for this to happen to his son ahead of his first Supercars race.
“I’m pretty devastated for Macca, he has done a great job so far and has not put a foot wrong,’’ he said.
“It’s not the way that you want to start your first race. Fortunately there is nothing wrong with him.”
