Wil Holmes decided to follow in his older sister’s footsteps about four years ago and start cycling competitively.
Now, the Norwood Cycling member is the holder of a new state junior cycling record.
Wil, 14, set a new record in the under-17 boys’ 2km individual pursuit at the SA/NT Junior Track Cycling Championships over the weekend with a time of 2:18.847.
He broke the original record of 2:19.200, which was set by current Mitchelton – Scott rider Callum Scotson in 2012.
The junior state championships were hosted at the Adelaide Super-Drome from Friday to Sunday and the three-day event was live streamed exclusively by The Advertiser.
Wil, of Glenelg South, also claimed gold in all five of his events — individual pursuit, time trial, scratch race, points race and sprint.
The youngster said he was proud to have broken the record, especially considering the year had been impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.
“I first started (cycling) riding with Dad on the rode,” Wil said.
“But my sister Chelsea, who’s now 19, started racing (competitively) and then about a year or two later I ended up doing the same thing she did.
“I was about 10 years old.
“I was pretty happy (setting the record) as I didn’t think I would go that quickly and to break it by a second was pretty good.
“I didn’t get as much training as I would’ve liked as there hasn’t been as much racing on the track because of COVID.”
Will said winning five gold medals and breaking a record gave him plenty of confidence heading into 2021, which he hoped would include the junior nationals in Brisbane in April.
He said road cycling is also a passion of his and he had long term goals of either riding at a Tour de France or representing Australia at an Olympic Games.
“I love the speed and thrill of racing around tracks,” Wil said.
“It makes me feel pretty good going into nationals.
“I’ll just see how it all plays out.”
Cyclists from all over SA, including in Mount Gambier and Whyalla, as well as a contingent from the NT raced at the three-day event.
Riders competed in time trial, individual pursuit, scratch race, points race, sprint, team sprint and team pursuit across under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 divisions.
Norwood finished the meet with 23 medals (13 gold and 10 bronze).
South Coast Cycling Club, which included rising star Elisabeth Green, meanwhile, ended the event with 31 medals (nine gold, 15 silver and seven bronze).
