Clinton Gray will remember December 13 now because of two very important milestones — his wedding anniversary and the day he won his first running sash in 18 years.

The 36-year-old from Victoria won the 120m men’s race at the Brighton Gift on Sunday.

And it was the first time he had come first in a race since winning at a meet at Aubrey in 2002.

Although Gray was also celebrating his one-year wedding anniversary with his wife Annabel on Sunday, she was not in the crowd cheering her husband on.

She was instead watching the race as it was live streamed exclusively by The Advertiser on advertiser.com.au.

“We are from Victoria, but my wife’s family is from SA and with COVID, she had been pretty anxious to get over here, so as soon as the borders opened, we came across,” Gray said.

“I had a chance to run last week and she came and watched me then but I only finished second in the heat and didn’t make the final, so she didn’t come today.

“But I’ll forgive her.

“They all tuned in on the live stream and when I got back to my phone I had a lot of messages, and I know she’s very proud.”

Gray, who is coached by Adrian Mott, is a journeyman of the sport, having taken up pro running at 15.

He then retired about 10 years ago before deciding to make a comeback in 2019 and shedding 8kg to ensure he was fit enough to compete again.

“I don’t think when I was running in my prime that I gave it everything,” Gray said.

“It (the comeback) was more to prove to myself that I could get fit and still run well.

“I had to change my body weight completely as I blew out a little bit in retirement and it was pretty hard work but this is a really nice reward for effort.

“I’m really grateful that we could get over here (to SA) and to win is the icing on the cake.”

Taylah Stallan, meanwhile, took out the women’s 120m race.

It was Stallan’s first victory in four years.

Her last win came in 2016 at the Brighton Gift in the under-18 400m race.

She said switching to Atalanta Athletics Adelaide and being trained by Dan Semmler has helped get back to her best.

Stallan finished that race first, with her twin sister Caitlin second and younger sister Lakara in third.

“I’m so excited and thankful to be able to be up there again,” Stallan, 19. said.

“This is my first women’s sash as well, so it’s really good to see the outcome of my hard work.

“Having a change and getting a full winter season under my belt and having everyone in the squad believe and support me through it has been a real big help.”
