The 23-man SANFL team, which is out to retain the Haydn Bunton Junior Cup, is dominated by ladder leader Glenelg, premier Woodville-West Torrens and second-placed South Adelaide, who boast 17 players between them.

Dynamic small forward Tyson Stengle, who amicably agreed to leave the Crows at the start of the season to join the Eagles after a series of off-field indiscretions last year, has made the star-studded SA side as he seeks an AFL mid-season rookie draft lifeline.

2006 No. 1 draft pick Bryce Gibbs, a veteran of 268 AFL games for Carlton and Adelaide, will start in the centre square after a brilliant start to the season with the Panthers, while another former Crow, Riley Knight, will also be a part of SA’s on-ball brigade.

The other players with AFL experience are Glenelg’s Liam McBean, Lachie Hosie and Luke Partington, South’s Matthew Broadbent, Port Adelaide’s Cam Sutcliffe and Eagles captain Luke Thompson.

Star Panthers teenager Jason Horne – in contention to be the first player chosen at this year’s AFL draft – missed selection after making the initial 35-man squad.

Medium forward Eamon Wilkinson, also from South, is the youngest player in the team at age 20.

SA is in discussions with WA about whether 22 or 23 players will take to the field on Saturday.

The two states are weighing up whether to have five players on the interchange bench, provide for a medical substitute or stick with the regulation 22 and four interchange players.

SA coach Jade Sheedy said he had picked an in-form squad with an emphasis on team balance and players knowing their roles.

Four clubs – Adelaide, Central District, Sturt and West Adelaide – do not have a representative.

“We’re very happy with the squad and pleased that everyone wanted to play in the game, which shows there is still a great hunger for State footy and highlights the rivalry between ourselves and WA, with the SANFL and WAFL still trying to press to be the best competition outside of the AFL,’’ he said.

“We’ve picked a balanced squad with flexibility but also a pretty role driven team where players will generally be asked to play the same roles they do at their clubs.

“If we can get that mix right in the line groups it will give us our best chance to win.’’

The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to Saturday’s 7.10pm AFL blockbuster between Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs.
