Dylan Landt is Glenelg’s accidental recruit.
“He basically fell into our lap,’’ coach Brett Hand noted, ahead of the Bays’ top-of-the-table clash with South Adelaide.
In an era where clubs are forced to fight hard for key recruits and the best offer usually lands the prize, Victorian half-back Landt chased the Tigers, rather than them chase him.
Pursuing his AFL dream and believing the SANFL was the best competition to push his draft case, Landt last year did his homework on the state league’s 10 clubs and decided Glenelg would be his best fit.
A minor injury will rule the 21-year-old out of Sunday’s blockbuster against the Panthers, which will be live streamed on the The Advertiser website from 2.10pm.
But Tigers head of football Paul Sandercock was quick to pounce of Landt, after he emailed the club on October 30. Within two weeks had signed a contract.

“He introduced himself via email, saying he was interested in coming to Glenelg in 2021
and outlining his credentials,’’ Sandercock recalled.
“We did our homework, saw the kid could play and within a couple of weeks sent him a contract and he was a Glenelg player.’’
It appears to have been good business.
Arriving at Tigerland just prior to the start of the season after he spent the summer playing in Darwin for St Mary’s, Landt forced his way into the league team for the round five clash against grand finalist North Adelaide at Prospect Oval and shone with 22 disposals.
He followed with 26 disposals and seven marks against Sturt in round six, standing out with his raking left-foot kick and taking kick-in duties for a side which is unbeaten leading into the encounter with second-placed South at Noarlunga Oval.
The highly-anticipated game is one of three SANFL fixtures being live streamed on advertiser.com.au this weekend and follows Saturday’s broadcast of both women’s semi-finals.
Landt, a gifted junior athlete who finished third in the 100m sprint at the Victorian state championships before deciding to focus on football when aged 15, came through the TAC Cup program with Calder Cannons.
He represented Vic Metro’s under-18s and played for Essendon’s VFL team in 2019, before playing in the NTFL last summer after the 2020 VFL season was cancelled because of COVID-19.
It was during this period when he plotted his next move.
“I did my research, knew the SANFL was a strong competition and that a lot of players had been picked up in the draft from there,’’ Landt said.
“Glenelg was the first club that came to mind because it had won the 2019 premiership, has a proud history and all of my mates thought it would be a good club to play for, given the location and the quality of players they had.
“So I emailed ‘Sandy’, who got straight back to me, and things progressed quickly. I couldn’t be happier with the way things have worked out.’’
Landt met Glenelg’s playing group – and lined up against them – when the Tigers played the NTFL in Darwin on the Australia Day weekend.
He was involved in some leadership workshops with the team and felt immediately at home.
An apprentice carpenter, Landt, who will miss Sunday’s clash because of a calf strain, has nominated for the mid-season rookie draft.
“The AFL is a dream of mine and something I’ve always been pushing for,’’ he said.
“But my immediate goal is to play consistent footy at state league level and help Glenelg be successful.’’
