He’s a country lad keen to make it on football’s national stage.
But Kallis Freer has a sole focus right now — beating Henley High in the All Schools Cup grand final on Tuesday.
Freer, originally from Wandearah on the east coast of Spencer Gulf, has almost finished his second season in Prince Alfred College’s First XVIII after arriving as a boarder last year.
The midfielder is desperate to beat the Boaters again, having featured in the decider victory over the same opponent as a Year 11 student last campaign.
The clash will be live streamed on advertiser.com.au this Tuesday from 1.15pm with five-time Port Adelaide SANFL premiership great David Hutton commentating.
“To win again would be unbelievable,” Freer, 18, said.
“Obviously coming off last year was great.
“But to win as a Year 12 would be even better.
“I’m just trying to put my best foot forward and hopefully make the big stage.
“(Playing AFL) would be the dream, but a lot of hard work needs to be done between then and now.”
Freer has had quite a football journey throughout his short career.
He lined up with Broughton Mundoora in the Northern Areas Football Association, where he caught the eye of North Adelaide and joined their junior ranks.
The on-baller made the six-hour round trip to Adelaide and back each weekend, before deciding to board at PAC.
Freer, who has also lined up with the Roosters under-18s this season, has captained his college for the past month, after co-skippers Luke Pedlar Jamison Murphy went down injured.
Despite being “pretty nervous”, Freer said his teams’ best was good enough to beat Henley.
“With all the injuries we’ve had this year, I’d love to get a win for those boys,” he said.
“We just need to play our game style and use some of our big targets up forward.”
PAC gained direct entry into the grand final after finishing top of the Messenger Shield ladder.
Henley earned the right to battle it out for the state title by proving too strong for Sacred Heart in the All Schools preliminary final last week.
“It’s a privilege to have it live streamed,” Freer said, of the Thebarton Oval decider.
“It’s the best of the best and there’s a lot of big names in college football.”
The All Schools Cup is a School Sport SA event, funded by the Department for Education.
