One is Henley High’s heart and soul leader, while the other is the team’s excitement machine.

Together Phoenix Spicer and Bailey Chamberlain are aiming to help their school claim a prestigious piece of silverware.

The AFL draft hopefuls have been a driving force behind the Boaters’ open school football team’s success in 2020 and are preparing to battle Prince Alfred College in the All Schools Cup grand final.

It is the fourth straight year the schools are playing each other in the decider.

The match will be live streamed on advertiser.com.au this Tuesday from 1.15pm with five-time Port Adelaide SANFL premiership great David Hutton commentating.

Spicer, a midfielder/forward with electric speed and strength around the contest, has also been invited to next month’s AFL national draft combine.

But it hasn’t always come easy for the youngster, who battled injuries last year and lacked confidence.

He said moving from Hamilton Secondary College to Henley High this year helped him improve.

“For me it’s been about being confident,” the South Adelaide reserves player said.

“Last year I wasn’t confident with my ability.

“I broke my arm after a tackle and missed out half a season.

“But I wanted to come back stronger this season and I have worked hard.”

Spicer, 18, hails from Numbulwar – a small community in the Northern Territory with a population of 672.

He had never picked up football until he moved to Adelaide when he was 11.

Spicer does, however, have former Henley High scholar and current Gold Coast Sun star, Izak Rankine, in his corner.

“I’m dating his (Rankine’s) younger sister, so he has given me some advice and some good tips,” Spicer said.

Henley earned the right to battle PAC for the title of state champion after proving too strong for Sacred Heart in the preliminary final earlier this week.

Chamberlain, 18, was voted captain and has had quite a journey after growing up in Roxby Downs before moving to Adelaide to start Year 9 at Henley.

The 179cm, 70kg midfielder believed the Boaters were good enough to beat PAC.

He was keen for revenge the Reds beat the Boaters in last year’s grand final.

“We are such a tight-knit group,” the West Adelaide reserves player said.

“Once we get up and about, it’s hard to stop us.

“We always hold high standards for each other and always strive to be better than the person we are playing or training on.

“It’s great people are getting around school footy and it’s great we’ve got such a big support with the live stream.

“Last year (losing to PAC) was devastating and I don’t want to lose this year, so we’ll come out and show everyone what we can do.”

Chamberlain and Spicer have received interest from interstate AFL club recruiters.

Henley’s open football coach Ben Kane said the pair deserved success.

“Phoenix has grown from strength to strength,” Kane said.

“If we reflect on his year, it’s been really impressive.

“Bailey has had a big influence in bringing this team close together.

“He’s our heart and soul.”

The match is being hosted at Thebarton Oval and will be live streamed on advertiser.com.au on Tuesday from 1.15pm.

The All Schools Cup is a School Sport SA event, funded by the Department for Education.
