Sunshine Coast have been crowned the men’s champions at the Water Polo Queensland Senior Country Championships after winning a thrilling penalty shootout against Gold Coast.

Down 8-6 with less than 90 seconds left, Sunshine Coast drew level on the final whistle, and then dominated the shootout to win 12-8.

Earlier, the combined Cairns/Sunshine Coast side scored some excellent goals as they reversed a loss 24 hours earlier to the same opponent to take the women’s title.

The north/south alliance, who lost 7-5 to Gold Coast on Saturday, got off to a fast start and then held their nerve to win 10-8.

Mackay took the bronze medal match 8-3 over hosts Townsville.
