On the eve of the biggest match of the men’s AWL season, Rhys Howden concedes Sydney Uni Lions haven’t had the easiest route to the grand final.
“But we’re there and we’re going to make the most of it,” he said.
Wins over UWA Torpedoes, Cronulla Sharks and Balmain Tigers have the Lions staring at their first title success in six years.
But getting past Drummoyne Devils in the decider will be a tough ask. The Devils have beaten them twice already this year and looked in superb form in their only game of the weekend thus far, a big win over Balmain.

That they won the elimination bouts showed not only their talent and resilience, but also that they had mastered the art of staying out of trouble.
In their qualifying final against Cronulla on day two, and again in their semifinal win over UTS Balmain Tigers on Saturday, the Lions stayed composed while their opponents self destructed.
The Sharks and Tigers both were hit with red cards and while the Lions had their fair share of exclusions, they mostly avoided any major trouble.
“I think it was just who could hold their head in the most,” Howden said.
“They were always going to just be up and down games.”
Howden said although he and his team are physically spent after their string of tough matches, anything can happen come grand final day.
“It’s the grand final, you have to find that bit of energy,” he said.
“We’ll rest as much as we can, try to eliminate some of the lapses from today but then all focus is on tomorrow.
“As long as we can keep our heads, we will give ourselves an opportunity to win.”
