The Australian Water Polo League finals series is right around the corner, and this year it is taking on a new format.

The finals series, which will see the top six teams in both the men’s and women’s leagues battle it out for national glory, will be played at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre across the Anzac long weekend in April.

KommunityTV will exclusively LIVE STREAM every match of the four-day finals extravaganza as part of our partnership with Water Polo Australia.

All of the action starts on Anzac Day, April 25, with the governing body planning a tribute to our fallen soldiers before the first match of the day.

Every team who travels to the finals weekend is guaranteed two games under the new format, while if a team wants to win it the hard way, they will have to hit the water every day.

A top two finish takes on new meaning this season, with the top sides not only earning a reprieve from playing the first day of the finals series, but also earning a second chance bonus for their opening match of the weekend.

Aussie Sharks co-captain and the leader of currently unbeaten Drummoyne Devils, Blake Edwards, said it was crucial for his team to finish at the top of the ladder to avoid the physical demands of playing all four days of the finals.

“I think there’s probably four other teams (outside of Drummoyne) that can take it out this year, which are Sydney Uni, Wests, Cronulla and Balmain,” Edwards said.

“Each of those teams can beat each other on their day.

“That’s why I think finishing in the top two will be a huge advantage, because those games are going to be really physically taxing.

“So if you’re lucky enough to finish in the top two, then bag an early win through to the final, that’ll be a really big advantage for the team to have a couple of games less potentially than their grand final opponent.”
