When South Adelaide’s Hayden Sampson dons his club’s indigenous guernsey he thinks of his mum Tasha and Aboriginal “trailblazer” David Kantilla.

“I wear this jumper with great pride,’’ he said, after joining players from all 10 SANFL clubs to unveil the striking guernseys they will showcase in this weekend’s Indigenous Round.
“Mum’s aboriginal, from the Northern Territory, and Kantilla was a superstar footballer and a real trailblazer for our footy club.
“To have a chance to show your culture, really put it in the spotlight for a round like this is something I'm really proud of.’’
Sampson will line up for the Panthers in Saturday’s clash with the Eagles, after Friday night’s Norwood-Sturt clash at The Parade kicks off the weekend action.
Our Indigenous Round coverage will centre on West Adelaide’s meeting with North Adelaide, as we live stream the league, reserves and under-18 fixtures from 10.30am on Saturday.

Sampson, the 21-year-old son of 1997 Crows AFL premiership forward Clay Sampson, said Kantilla held legendary status at Pantherland, where he is a Hall of Fame member.
Nicknamed “Soapy” and originally from the Tiwi Islands in the NT, he is recognised as the first indigenous Australian to play in the SANFL after debuting for South in 1961.
Standing at 196cm and possessing a giant leap, Kantilla won consecutive Knuckey Cups as Panthers club champion in his first two years at the club, represented SA four times and starred in the ruck in South’s 1964 grand final triumph against Port Adelaide – the club’s last flag.
SANFL Indigenous Round, which leads into NAIDOC Week, is a celebration and recognition of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players who have made, and continue to make, such a significant contribution to Australian football.
A Welcome to Country or Acknowledgment of Country will be performed before each league game during the round.
“All the guernseys look great,’’ said Sampson, a dashing wingman/half-back who represented South Australia in this year’s 53-point win against Western Australia at Adelaide Oval.
“There are so many different designs and they are all very sharp.’’
South’s indigenous guernsey was designed by Flinders University student Mya Damon.
The theme behind the design is connection, particularly the connection between the Panthers and their local southern region.
“It was great to be able to include bright colours and symbols to symbolise coming together, community and connection,’’ Damon said.
The front of the South guernsey shows meeting places and others coming together as one while the back symbolises the Panthers’ connection to Port Noarlunga at Flinders University Stadium.

Other club jumpers were designed by – Adelaide (player Ben Davis); Central District (Kaurna Plains School student Latisha Dodd); Glenelg (player Marlon Motlop and his cousin Keelan Fejo); North Adelaide (Janet Doolan and Karii Doolan-O’Loughlin, the mother and sister of player Blayne O’Loughlin); Norwood (Joanne Ken, mother of player Dom Barry); Port Adelaide (local artist Elle Campbell); Sturt (former player Jeremy Johncock and artist Pat Caruso); West Adelaide (Harley Hall of Aboriginal Art Designs in consultation with players Kenny Karpany and Luke Wilson); Woodville-West Torrens (player Connor McLeod and his dad, Crows Hall of Famer Andrew McLeod).
The Crows will not wear their indigenous guernsey against Glenelg due to a clash of colours.
They donned it instead against North Adelaide in round nine.
Our live stream starts with West’s reserves clash with North from 10.30am on Saturday and continues with the Roosters v Bloods under-18 encounter at 11am.
The same two clubs will square off in our league broadcast from 1.10pm, as West bids to climb off the bottom of the ladder and North aims to cling to a finals berth.
