Ten grand finals from the four-day hoops carnival were exclusively live streamed on advertiser.com.au on Monday, a year after the annual event was cancelled due to COVID.
The Advertiser’s coverage included close mates Brooklyn Arnold, of Sturt, going head-to-head with Dylan Lomman, of Norwood, in the top-tier under-12 boys championship decider.
Both sides convincingly overcame Victorian opponents in Monday morning’s semi-finals.
Sturt downed Camberwell Dragons and Norwood saw off Kilsyth Cobras to advance.
But Arnold had the last laugh in a tournament featuring more than 200 teams and 33 divisions, topscoring as the Sabres’ defeated the Flames 30-23 in a seesawing success.
“It feels very good,” shooting guard Arnold, 10, said.
“It’s a bit challenging playing against Dylan, but it’s good playing with my friends.
“Our defending and passing was good.
“I think we can win some more (competitions this season).”
Preliminary matches began on Good Friday across six Adelaide venues, as teams from Victoria, NSW and WA took on SA’s best.
Sturt’s under-12 boys victory was one of five top-tier title wins by hometown clubs.
Norwood impressively saw off Sydney Diamonds 37-22 in the under-14 girls, while West Adelaide Bearcats prevailed 47-41 over Kilsyth B in the under-14 boys.
Central Districts downed the Flames 59-38 to claim under-16 boys honours, in another all-Adelaide decider, and Vipers edged out Yarra Wild Beasts 46-38 in the under-21 boys.
The under-12 boys grand final was among the pick of the fixtures, during the live stream across two courts at the ARC Campbelltown.
Norwood led by one at the first break, but Sturt held a three-point buffer at the main interval and last change.
Lomman sunk a bucket early in fourth period to get the Flames back to within a point.
But the Sabres, led by Arnold’s game-high nine points, pushed away in the home straight to secure glory.
“I was playing against my friend Brookie (Arnold) and he’s always in my ear,” said 10-year-old Lomman, who averaged 10.5 points per game for the tournament.
“But it was fun.
“We got to learn how they (interstate teams) play and how different they can be (during the carnival).
“I’m feeling tired now.”
Forestville progressed to the under-16 girls grand final, but was no match for a powerful Melbourne Tigers, which also took out the under-18 girls division.
Other Victorian sides to prevail were Kilsyth (under-12 girls), Bulleen (under-18 boys) and Caroline Springs Blue Devils (under-21 girls).
