Henley High rising star Emma Wightman is confident her team can take it all at the School Sport SA open hockey finals.
All 22 of the tournament’s girls and boys games will be live streamed exclusively by The Advertiser across two pitches at Hockey SA Stadium from 9.30am on Monday.
Five schools – Henley High, Grant High, St Martin’s, Scotch College and St Mark’s College – will compete for female honours in the Marg Daly Cup.
The male competition, the Gerry Phillips Cup, will feature also feature Henley and Grant, as well as Prince Alfred College, Nuriootpa High and St Peter’s College.
Each team will play each other once, before the top two girls and boys sides square off in the grand finals at 2.30pm.
“I think we’re really well set-up with some experience and some new young girls,” said Wightman, of her Henley High team.
“So I’m confident we can go far.
“We’ve all got great skill and our team chemistry is at a high. It’s never about individuals with us, always the team.”
The Henley girls, who were dominant throughout the qualifiers, will open their finals campaign against Scotch first up on Monday.
Wightman said getting off to a strong start would be crucial.
“It’ll be a tough game and we’ll need a good result,” she said.
“But I think with the players we’ve got, we’re going to get far.”
The boys’ start at 10am, as Henley take on Prince Alfred on Pitch 1 and Nuriootpa meet St Peter’s on Pitch 2.
Nuriootpa player Kobi Schulz said his side was looking forward to a challenging tournament.
“We’re going to give it a good crack.,” Schulz said.
“There are a lot of good schools competing which should be a good test for us, so we’ll see how we go.”
Teammate Danny Carmody said the team had a strong chance of success.
“We beat St Peter’s last year, so we’re looking forward to hopefully topping them again with what is a slightly different team,” Carmody said.
“It should be a tight game.”
Nuriootpa sports manager Brad West was wary of the depth of talent his team would face.
“We realise we have a strong team,” West said.
“But when it comes to schools like PAC, they’re really strong.
“We’re obviously realistic when it comes to that challenge. But who knows, if we can get an early goal and play it defensive we might come out on top.”
Max Bentley, also of Nuriootpa, was keen to face off against friends.
“I’ve got a lot of mates in Adelaide and I’m really keen to be able to go up against them and see how I go,” Bentley said.
“The tournament is going to be a lot of fun.”
Live stream coverage from Hockey SA Stadium begins at 9.30am on advertiser.com.au. Games will be broadcast from Pitch 1 and Pitch 2 simultaneously.
