Three years after being overlooked by Brisbane as a father-son pick, son of a gun Casey Voss has rocketed into AFL draft calculations.

A shift from the midfield to halfback midway through last season has seen the 20-year-old son of Lions legend Michael Voss become one of the SANFL’s most reliable players, shutting down opponents while also proving to be an offensive weapon.

With three minor round series remaining, Voss is the third-highest ranked Champion Data ranking points defender in the competition, averaging 105.

Only North Adelaide captain Alex Spina and high-leaping Panther Joseph Haines, who made this year’s state team, rank higher among backmen, averaging 109 points.

Voss will get another chance to impress in the Double Blues’ clash against Port Adelaide at Unley Oval from 2.30pm on Saturday, a match that will be live streamed on Advertiser.com.au.

Voss is averaging 23 disposals and seven marks and was the equal-highest disposal winner, with 32, in the Double Blues’ defensive masterclass against West Adelaide last week when the Bloods were kept to the lowest SANFL score in 112 years, going goalless and managing just 0.6 in a 76-point drubbing at Richmond Oval.

“I’ve never played in a game like that, it was a great effort from us,’’ Voss said.

“It was a terrific all-round defensive performance, not just from our back seven but from all over the field, and we took a lot of pride in keeping an opponent goalless because our defensive structure is a key part of our game.’’

Brownlow Medallist – joined Port Adelaide as an assistant coach in 2015, is downplaying his role. While dual Sturt premiership coach Martin Mattner has used his defensive expertise to produce the stingiest backline in the league, Voss’s string of standout performances have caught the eye of AFL recruiting scouts, who have noted his high football IQ, strong intercept marking and penetrating kick.

“I had some conversations with Brisbane about being drafted a few years ago but unfortunately nothing came to fruition,’’ Voss said.

“At the moment my focus is on finishing the season off strongly with Sturt, I love the club,

but I’m sure that everyone my age has AFL aspirations.

“If I was to get that chance I’d love to try to prove myself at the next level.’’

The 185cm, 82kg Voss has vast inside knowledge of the AFL.

He grew up in the Lions den while his dad was playing until 2006 and then coaching there from 2009-2013.

“Growing up in a footy family, around a footy club and watching so much footy, you pick up a lot of things that help you understand the game better and what’s required,’’ Voss said.

Michael has also been a massive influence on his football.

“He’s been a huge help and has always encouraged me to do extras, all the little things you can do to better yourself,’’ he said.

“But while he’s a big name in the footy world, he’s just always been dad to me and offered great support.’’

Voss, who after he moved to Adelaide spent one season with Glenelg’s under-16s before the family moved close to Unley Oval, has thrown his support behind this weekend’s SANFL Breakthrough Community Round, which supports mental health.

Voss’s former Sturt teammate, dual Magarey Medallist Zane Kirkwood, who retired after round seven because of a debilitating back injury, has battled mental health issues and raised more than $40,000 for the cause in 2019 by riding from Perth to Adelaide.

“This is a special round for everyone involved in football,’’ said Voss, who will join other SANFL players in donning purple and blue armbands in support of the Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation in games this weekend.
