A RESERVES grand final berth is up for grabs – along with a potential spot in Woodville-West Torrens’ league grand final team – at Thebarton Oval on Saturday.
While the Eagles’ league side has the weekend off after beating minor premier Glenelg in the second semi-final, to advance to its second consecutive decider, the reserves will take on Central District for a spot in next week’s seconds grand final against the Tigers.
The high-stakes game will be live streamed at advertiser.com.au from 11am on Saturday.
And there is more than just a win on the line, with several Eagles players wanting to push their cases for a position in senior coach Jade Sheedy’s league grand final team.
With veteran star Matthew Goldsworthy hurting his hamstring last week and in serious doubt for the grand final, experienced forward Jake Von Bertouch, defender Pierce Seymour, the clever Ethan Haylock and Zane Williams and off-season recruits Dane McFarlane and Mitchell Hardie are among those on the fringe of league selection who need to make a statement.
Hardie kicked four goals and had 25 disposals in last week’s reserves second semi-final loss to Glenelg, while McFarlane had 22 touches, to headline the chasing pack of players.
Goldsworthy, who is hunting a third league premiership medal, had his hamstring heavily iced after last Saturday’s league clash and faces a race against time to be fit for the grand final.
“Goldy is an important part of our team and it will be touch-and-go whether he gets up for the grand final,’’ Sheedy said.
While the Eagles reserves players will be pushing for a last-gasp league berth, the Bulldogs have just one goal in mind – making the grand final.
They finished the minor round in fifth spot, with a 9-9 win-loss record, but have delivered two impressive wins in the finals, thrashing West Adelaide by 70 points and convincingly beating Sturt by 39.
The Dogs’ key players include Nick Lange, Rhett Montgomerie and Jacob Templeton, but they have been hit by the loss of potential draftees Isaiah Dudley, Shay Linke and Lachlan Grubb through SA under-19 commitments.
The reserves final will be played at Thebarton Oval at 11am on Saturday and be live streamed at advertiser.com.au.
