A clutch fourth-quarter goal from Ben Heaslip has sealed a Queen’s Birthday upset for South Adelaide and injected life back into its campaign.

The Panthers led by 27 points early in the second term but were pegged back by the in-form Roosters, who took the lead in the fourth quarter.

But Heaslip, who had already booted two majors, kicked his third and most crucial goal of the game in the dying minutes to seal victory for South.

The Panthers saluted 8.12 (60) to 8.10 (58).

And it was the SANFL broadcast match on offer on advertiser.com.au this long weekend.

On Saturday, North continued its trangehold over top spot on the SANFL under-18 ladder with a 74-point drubbing of South.

PREVIEW: MEET THE ROOSTERS’ HIGH-FLYING INSPIRATION

He has taken the SANFL by storm this season, producing one highlight reel after another.

But high-flying North Adelaide excitement machine Nigel Lockyer Jnr would not be lighting up the league without a unique partnership struck by the club with the Redtails Pinktails Right Tracks Program in Central Australia.

In fact, Lockyer Jnr said he does not know where he would be without the support of the educational program, which aims to strengthen the link between sport and community health outcomes, and the Roosters.

Lockyer Jnr and North will be in live streamed SANFL action against South Adelaide on Monday – one of three games broadcast on advertiser.com.au.

“The program has been unreal for me and played a huge part in getting me to where I am now, playing high level, SANFL footy,’’ said the freakishly talented Lockyer Jnr.

“It wouldn’t have been doable for me without a program like this because back home in Alice Springs there was almost no hope.

“It was hard growing up there, in a pretty bad environment with drug and alcohol abuse where there was a general lack of motivation.

“People I grew up with were drinking heavily and smoking things they shouldn’t and it was hard to keep distractions away and stay focused on something you are trying to achieve in your life.

“I’ve made some bad decisions, dropping out of school and giving footy away for a year, but this program helped me get back on track and find the motivation to move forward.’’

Lockyer Jnr, 24, is the poster child for the Alice Springs based program, which was established by locals to use sport as a way of providing improved health, including reducing alcohol and drug harm, and employment opportunities.

The athletic, 186cm forward is the first player from the training program to move to the SANFL on a full-time basis.

His move was orchestrated last year after talks between North football services manager Darryl Wintle and Redtails president Rob Clarke, which were organised by former Rooster and North Melbourne small forward Matt Campbell.

“Matty said the program would be worth having a look at and things progressed from there,’’ Wintle said.

“We committed to it last year, seeing it as a great vehicle to give opportunities to young people who want to commit to something that they enjoy, creating a pathway for Central Australia kids, while having educational programs around changing people’s lives.’’

After making his league debut in an upset round one win against back-to-back premier Woodville-West Torrens, Lockyer Jnr has not only retained his spot in the Roosters team, he has flourished for the surprise ladder leader, which boasts an 8-1 record.

In nine games, he has kicked 13 goals, along with 11 behinds, and averaged four marks, including several mark of the year contenders.

Lockyer Jnr said his league debut had been “a long time in the making’’ and had come after years of making excuses.

“I remember my coaches pushing me pretty hard when I was younger and I used to complain about everything, saying I'm sore and giving excuses every day,’’ he said.

“To get to the position to play at a high level I had to accept the fact that this stuff is hard, that you’ve got to do the hard work no matter what, and I’ve loved it.’’

Lockyer Jnr, who trialled for an AFL list spot with Essendon in 2020 before being overlooked, had his first taste of life at Prospect last year when he flew to Adelaide to test the waters, playing five reserves games and showcasing his enormous talent by kicking 15 goals.

It whetted his appetite to return on a full-time basis this year.

He is making every post a winner in one of the SANFL’s 2022 feel-good stories.
