Live stream: Victorian young gun Raphael Savelli into quarter-finals at Junior Claycourt Championships

He started the Claycourt Nationals on shaky ground, but Victorian underage star Raph Savelli is growing in confidence with every forehand.

There is an unabashed confidence that exudes from young Victorian left-hander Raphael Savelli.

It’s unsurprising when he has been playing the sport for more than two-thirds of his life.

The Melbourne-based eighth seed advanced to the quarter-finals in the Boys Under-14 division at the Junior Claycourt Nationals with a crisp straight sets win over Western Australian challenger Elroi Chiripamberi.

While the pair traded powerful blows across the opening set, Savelli’s speed across the court and decisive forehand work proved too much for his rival in a one-sided second set winning 6-3, 6-2.

The match headlined a big second day of action at the Junior Claycourt Nationals where five matches were exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from the tournament’s ‘show court’.

“It was a pretty good match and I felt really good, I was playing really physical from the start,” Savelli said.

“My body position was right, I was looking for more forehands and I got my feet moving early. I think the first round is always a bit shaky, you don’t know what to expect.

“But I had more confidence in my game and the way I play.”

Savelli has been running around a tennis court since he was four, with his passion for the sport only increasing over the nine years he has played.

Already a winner at the national level after his breakthrough win in the Under-12 boys championships at the Junior Hardcourts Nationals last year, Savelli has made the step up the Under-14s ranks this year with aplomb.

Savelli reached the quarter-finals of the Junior Grasscourt Championships in January, losing to eventual national title winner and top seed Lucas Han.

Now back in the quarter-finals again, Savelli said his confidence was sky-high.

“After (Round 1), I was not that confident, it was a rough start,” he said. “After today I have a lot of confidence. I beat a good player.

“I will just take it one game at a time, there are a lot of good players (at the tournament).”

Savelli has to wait an extra day before quarters as the doubles tournament takes centre stage at the JCN on Thursday.

The singles action will return on Friday, with a mix of singles and doubles finals on the show court.
